More information
ECICOG is planning to apply for an EPA Brownfields Assessment Coalition Grant. This grant would provide funding for brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments, and community outreach in our region. The ECICOG region includes Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties.
What is a Brownfield?
Brownfields are properties that may be challenging to redevelop due to the presence or potential presence of hazardous materials or other environmental contaminants. These properties are generally abandoned, idle, or underused commercial or industrial properties.
Examples of potential brownfield sites (commercial/industrial): former gas stations, former dry cleaners, factories, warehouses, salvage yards, mills, abandoned railroads, bulk oil plants, automotive repair shops, vacant lots, a building (could be residential) that may contain asbestos, lead-based paint, or other contamination, such as a former meth lab.
